Getting Hired in PR - More Advice
Yesterday I talked about what to do to get noticed and hired in public relations.
Today, a round-up of advice from others.
Warren Allan Johnson offers six tips for university students angling for a job in PR, including getting your foot in the door, joining a professional association, and writing a good resume.
PR podcaster Terry Fallis talks with Porter Novelli Canada president Trevor Campbell about how to get noticed and get hired in a public relations firm.
Washington communications veteran Denise Graveline gives John Stauffer advice about careers:
"Take more calculated risks. Ask lots of questions. Get your hands dirty — you won’t know about what works until you’ve tried it. Get as much training as you can — look at every job as a new master’s degree. Work on a strategy for your career, even if it changes."
The Forward Blog has a career advice section that’s worth checking out. And on the MarCom Blog, Susan Getgood gives PR students advice: "Be planful. Know what kind of company you want to work for. What type of culture you want to be in."
And last, but not least, Killian Advertising maintains an online wall of shame that is a long series of cautionary tales for people writing cover letters. See Cover Letters from Hell (names changed to protect the guilty).

Hey Eric, thanks for the shout out. You’ve found some great links for PR job seekers! Terry Fallis in Canada has a nice PR podcast, but I missed the one you cited so I’ll have to go back and listen.
Another great tip for PR job seekers is to make sure they get writing experience. Any where. And as much as possible. I won’t hire someone who hasn’t done something like work on a student newspaper, blogged or did volunteer news releases for a community organization — and I want to see the clips.
Best regards,
Warren

Warren: Thanks for dropping by. Writing experience and samples are key, for just about any communications work.
Reading is one of those things that strengthens a writer and communicator, but you don’t see it mentioned much. I think Inside PR talked about that as a factor when interviewing job candidates, but I don’t remember which episode.

Eric,
Thanks for the link, glad my ‘Advice from the Top” column was helpful.
The Foward Blog is a great resource too, thanks for spreading the word.
Cheers,

Well, I do have some writing experience, and already have the reputation of being the annoying person that incessently asks “why?” and wants to do everything.
I guess everyone can start sending me job offers. Better yet, I’m looking for an internship soon, so let me know if you want a real shining star.
