When in doubt, ask.
ValleyWag quotes 20 technology journalists on what they appreciate in public relations people. Many of the answers are applicable far beyond the tech industry.
Some suggestions (my paraphrasing):
- Help the journalist understand the industry, not just your company.
- Be prepared, become an expert in your company, its products and its field.
- Instead of wasting time with news releases, pitch a story that will be worth pursuing.
- Be honest, straightforward and respectful.
