The World Gets Less Flat at Northern Voice
Thursday night I had the pleasure of meeting Sachi and Lee Lefever in person.
I’ve been following Lee online since before I started blogging. And when he and his wife Sachi decided to blog about their year-long trip around the world, I was ready to live vicariously through them. As I walked up to Lee to introduce myself, he cried “Eric!”, and threw his arms around me. Recognized me from the photo on my blog.
Lee gave a photo show/talk about the trip Thursday night for bloggers, podcasters and other interested in Social Media who were in Vancouver for the Northern Voice conference.
Visiting 29 countries over 366 days, the couple learned a lot about people.
Now they’re back in Seattle, and Lee is back in the job of helping organizations create and manage online communities.
If his work as a social media consultant lost momentum while he was away, he doesn’t look worried. The trip was worth more than money, and more than racking up clients. It was the kind of adventure you only embrace if you have the guts to put everything else aside.
And if asked about his experience building online communities, he can point to the site he and Sachi built to record their adventure, and to engage fellow travellers and armchair travellers in the planning and reporting about their trip.
Not everything you do has to be a career move. Life’s too short to be so single-minded that you miss those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
