Open Source Consulting: Your 2 Cents for Promoting a Top Myspacer’s Book

by Eric Eggertson on March 24th, 2007

As an experiment in open source consulting, I thought everyone who visits Common Sense PR could lend a hand as I try to help Kevin Palmer launch a book based on his experiences as a top MySpace blogger.

Feel free to pitch in with any ideas you want to share publicly by leaving a comment here, or ping me privately at eggertson (at) gmail (dot) com, and I’ll pass it on.

The Challenge: Promote this book

Pointless Banter book cover - Kevin PalmerKevin has written a book that is a selection of blog posts from 2004-2005, with introductions to each to set the scene. He was asking an e-mail group I belong to if we had any ideas for promoting his book, and I said I’d put the word out, if he answered some questions about what exactly he hopes to accomplish.

His myspace page.

Who’s your primary market?

Kevin: Tucker Max readers, anyone from 18-40 that likes humor, fans of comedy in general. I actually have a 65-70% female reader base.

What do you want to accomplish with your book?

Kevin: I want to gain more blog readers. I already have one of the most five read blogs on myspace. I beat celebs like Kevin Smith and others in the blog rankings on there… Basically this is a warm up for a second book to be published later in the year, I want this to set the ground work.

What sets your blog or your book apart - what is the unique selling point?

Kevin: I explain why I wrote every entry so it shows the thought process of a humor writer, how I picked something out that day in the news or how something motivated me to write about it.

What’s the five-second pitch about you?

Kevin: Myspace has models and bands that took their popularity and expanded past the confines of myspace. I want to be the first major blogger on there to do so, I am their cross over blogger.

Kevin’s blog: Pointless Banter

I’ve only spent a few minutes reading through some posts. Let’s just say crude sexual humour, politically incorrect jokes and lots of mockery are Kevin’s stock in trade.

My first thoughts are that I still don’t know what sets Kevin’s book apart from a million other books, so I’ll need to ask some more questions. He’s thinking of offering a selection as a downloadable freebie. Maybe if I could read that segment, I’d have a better idea what we’re dealing with. Also, his description of his target market doesn’t really help me figure out where to reach out to his market, other than the obvious promotions inside Myspace.

I’ll start the promotion plan in the next post. If you have suggestions, add them here.
