Common Sense PR

Fighting Foreclosure, the PR Version

by Eric Eggertson on May 27th, 2007

I don’t know K.D. Paine. Never met her. I think I might have left a comment on her blog once, but maybe not.

So when I sent her a $20 donation this morning, it was more out of a sense of participating in a classic little guy versus the bad bank scenario, than out of any personal relationship.

Shankhassick Farm, K.D. PaineA communications measurement consultant, Paine also owns a farm. When the original buildings were destroyed by fire in 1999, she rebuilt. Now the bank wants to sell the land and buildings out from under her.

She’s well on her way to raising the $150,000 needed to pay off property taxes and mortgage payments owing, which should give her some breathing room.

For the little guy, for Katie’s willingness to share her thoughts about public relations measurement, and for her openness about her battle with breast cancer, I got off my butt for two minutes and clicked on her donate button. I used to work for the credit union system, and I’ve seen how easy it can be for someone to get cornered financially.

Yeah, $20 donated to a micro-lending site would have made a bigger difference to a family somewhere in the world. And I’ve made donations to a couple of micro-lending organizations in recent years.

In this instance, I like to think that others I’ve met online would rally around me if I had some setback that I couldn’t get myself past without help.

Good luck with the farm, Katie. If I’m ever back in New Hampshire, I’ll try to drop by and see how things are going.
