Conrad Black’s Image: Why Do the Character References Only Arrive After the Trial?

Conrad Black is a saint.

The character references flooded in for the convicted executive’s sentencing. They describe a compassionate, thoughtful, generous man.

Why did Black have to pay $30 million in legal fees to get some help with his image?

A little public relations work prior to his tussle over questionable deals by Hollinger could have turned out differently if he hadn’t set himself up as a paragon of corporate arrogance and greed. Executives like that make a good target for ambitious prosecutors.

Moral of the story: If your media coverage projects an image that is out of touch with the times, think about adjusting your PR strategy.
